Based on the new European Construction Products Regulation:

CE marking of fasteners referring to EU 305/2011

01.07.2013

On the occasion of the new European Construction Products Regulation EU 305/2011 which has entered into force on 1 July 2013, Lederer inform their customers and interested parties about the concrete effects of the CE marking obligation. The following information only applies to stainless steel articles from the Lederer catalogue. Articles and materials not included herein require an individual case review; in this case please contact your local Lederer sales engineer.

Do all fasteners have to carry the CE symbol?

No. The CE marking is not prescribed in general for all fasteners with reference to the product (e.g. by a product standard), but is effected due to their application (use) on a legal basis. Since fasteners are used in many different applications, there is no basic marking obligation. This means that depending on the application of the fasteners a decision has to be made on whether the connecting element must be marked with the CE symbol. However, this information can only be provided by the end user.

What is the basis for a CE marking obligation of fasteners??

The CE marking can only be effected on a legal basis as e.g. the Construction Products Regulation EU 305/2011 (CPR).

According to the CPR, all construction products which are permanently incorporated in buildings and whose function has an effect on the important requirements to buildings must be marked with the CE symbol. Important requirements to buildings are e.g. fire protection, mechanical strength and stability. This automatically means that not all fasteners used in buildings must be marked with the CE symbol, but only those having an influence on the above-mentioned important requirements to buildings. However, also this information can only be provided by the end user. It cannot be derived from the type of the fastener.

Where do the requirements to the relevant products for a CE marking come from?

The CPR do not specify any requirements for specific products. The basis are harmonised standards. For our product ranges three harmonised standards are applicable at present. These are DIN EN 14592 (Timber structures – Dowel-type fasteners), DIN EN 15048-1 (Non-preloaded structural bolting assemblies for metal structures (SB bolts)) and DIN EN 14399-1 (High-strength structural bolting assemblies for preloading (HR/HV bolts)).

Customer requirements

In order to meet the requirements with regard to the CE marking obligation, it is necessary to give information on the relevant harmonised standard when sending the enquiry/order. Statements like: „We need a CE symbol!“ are unfortunately insufficient. If there is no information on the CE marking in the enquiry and order, it is possible that the fasteners supplied do not carry the CE symbol.

Which products carrying the CE symbol can be supplied by Lederer?

  • Fasteners acc. to DIN EN 14592 (timber structures)

At present the following groups of items marked with the CE symbol are available:

    L 9066 - Chipboard screws (partial thread) countersunk head, cross recess Z - A2
L 9066 - Chipboard screws (partial thread) countersunk head, six lobe drive - A2
    L 9067 - Chipboard screws (full thread) countersunk head, cross recess Z - A2
L 9067 - Chipboard screws (full thread) countersunk head, six lobe drive - A2

L 9068 - Chipboard screws (partial thread) pan head, six lobe drive - A2
    L 9068 - Chipboard screws (full thread) pan head, cross recess Z - A2

L 9069 - Chipboard screws (full thread) raised countersunk head, cross recess Z - A2
L 9069 - Chipboard screws (full thread) raised countersunk head, six lobe drive - A2

At the moment we are checking further fasteners acc. to DIN EN 14592; we are pleased to accept your enquiries for concrete items.

    Screws acc. to DIN 571
The scope of application of DIN 571:2010-11 excludes the use of these screws in supporting timber structures. Furthermore the tolerances specified for the external diameter and many standardised thread lengths do not meet the requirements of DIN EN 14592. Therefore these screws cannot be supplied with the CE symbol.

    Metric bolts and nuts
For this product group stainless steel materials are not defined in the DIN EN 14592 and can therefore not be offered with a CE symbol. The procurement of metric bolts and nuts made of carbon steel (e.g. 8.8) is possible based on your individual enquiry and will be checked for each individual case.
  • Bolting assemblies acc. to DIN EN 15048 (metal structures)
We will offer these items upon receipt of a concrete enquiry.
  • High-strength structural bolting assemblies for preloading acc. to DIN EN 14399-1 (metal structures)
For this product group stainless steel materials are not defined in the DIN EN 14399-1 and can therefore not be offered with a CE symbol. The procurement of these items made of carbon steel (e.g. 8.8) is possible based on your individual enquiry and will be checked for each individual case.
